MONMOUTH — A Wayne man escaped serious injury Sunday when his car’s roof was flattened after crashing into a tree off Wilson Pond Road.
Matthew Libby, 28, fled the accident scene and later went by private vehicle to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, said Monmouth Police officer Dana Wessling.
Wessling subsequently summoned Libby on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries and failure to report a car accident.
The crash occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday as Libby was driving his Geo Prism west on Wilson Pond Road. Libby told police he swerved to avoid a deer and then skidded out of control on ice.
The Prism went over an embankment, rolled over onto its side and skidded roof-first into a tree. The impact crushed the roof over Libby’s head.
