CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Sean Machin scored six goals as the Thomas men’s lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, beating Wheelock, 14-4, on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas (1-4) scored four goals in each of the first three quarters to build a 12-2 lead. Erik Tiner II added four goals and an assist, while Derek Racine put in two goals. Matt Davis and Jesse Morkeski each had a goal to round out the scoring. Gunnar Shelton pitched in with three assists.

Racine and Morkeski each split time in goal, combining for 15 saves to go with their three goals.

Wheelock (0-4) had 15 man-up opportunities but did not score on any of them. Kevin Karcekas scored three goals for the Wildcats. Mike Manning made 24 saves for Wheelock, setting the school’s single-game record.

Colby 11, Hamilton 10: John Jennings scored five goals and goalie Peter Reiley had 12 saves to lead the Mules n a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Colby (1-1) led 10-5 late in the third quarter before the Continentals (0-3) stormed back.

Jon Leanos scored four goals to lead Hamilton.

Rivier 9, UMaine-Farmington 1: The Beavers outshot Rivier 26-22 but the Raiders earned the win in Nashua, N.H.

Rivier (2-0) had a 24-8 advantage in ground balls, and goalkeeper Chris Benoit made 16 saves on UMF’s 17 shots on goal. Shawn Donovan led Rivier’s attack with three goals and three assists. Jeff Kelly and Danny Hooper each contributed a pair of goals.

The Raiders led 7-0 before Tennessee Peters scored for UMF (0-1) early in the fourth quarter. Hunter Rowell had 10 saves for the Beavers.

Softball

UConn 8, Maine 2: Amy Vaughn hit a three-run home run and Kim Silva added a two-run shot to lead the Huskies in a non-conference game in Hempstead, N.Y.

Emily O’Donnell also homered for UConn (5-9).

Chelsea Kunin went 2-for-3 with a double and Jennifer Eberhardt had a pair of hits to pace Maine (5-18).

Also Saturday: Erskine graduate Nick Grady went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple in the first game of a doubleheader as Southern Maine baseball defeated Bridgewater State, 9-6. Gardiner grad Forrest Chadwick doubled and scored the winning run as USM won the nightcap, 2-1. … Lawrence grad John Flynn went 2-for-7 in a baseball doubleheader as Worcester Polytechnic Institute split with Babson, winning 1-0, and losing 7-1 in 13 innings. … Cony grad Cassie Diplock had four goals as St. Joseph’s defeated Anna Maria, 21-9, in women’s lacrosse action.
