BELGRADE — A Chelsea woman is facing charges that she punched a sheriff’s deputy in the face, breaking his nose.

Nastasha Meghan Massey, 28, was charged with assault on a police officer. She was being held Monday at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $2,000 bail.

Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Hardy was treated for a broken nose at the hospital, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

“He went home after the incident and will be on light duty for a week as a precaution,” Davies said.

Hardy went to 370 Smithfield Road shortly before 11 p.m. Friday after a caller reported a domestic dispute. Massey was reported to be breaking windows and other personal items inside the house, Davies said.

Hardy met with the caller, Fred Horne, but Massey had fled by that time. Hardy tried to find Massey, searching the area in his cruiser, and then decided to check the house one last time before leaving.

He saw Massey standing on the porch.

“As soon as he pulled back into the dooryard, Massey became belligerent,” Davies said.

Hardy confronted Massey, who at one point tried to go back into the house.

“Deputy Hardy tried to intervene, when Massey suddenly turned and, with a closed fist, punched him on the face, breaking his nose,” Davies said.

Hardy regained his composure and arrested Massey without further incident, Davies said.

Massey, who cut her hand while breaking windows in the house, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where she was treated and released to jail officials.
