BANGOR — No. 4 Thomas college earned another upset win, beating No. 2 Castleton State 3-1, to earn a berth in the North Atlantic Conference championship round Saturday afternoon at O’Keefe Field.

The Terriers, who beat No. 1 Husson on Friday, will play Husson again in the championship round at 11 a.m., today. Husson would need to beat Thomas twice to win the championship.

Kelsey Crowe pitched a complete game for Thomas, allowing one run on six hits to earn her sixth win of the season. She struck out eight and walked one.

Thomas beat NAC Player of the Year Taylor Lively. The Terriers took a 2-0 lead on a single by Alei Collier, double by Alyssa Eugley, a sacrifice fly by Crowe and a throwing error. They added a run in the sixth when on an RBI groundout by McKayla Gastia.

Maine 7-9, UMBC 1-1: The Black Bears had 21 hits on their way to a doubleheader sweep in Orono.
Lindsey Jenkins and Jennifer Eberhardt both went 3 for 3 for Maine (14-26-1, 5-7-1 in America East).

Jessica Burke went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Colby 4-0, Trinity 3-7: Colby scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning of Game 1 and then held on to earn a victory in a split of a NESCAC doubleheader in Hartford, Conn.

Fairfield native Lindsey Peterson highlighted the rally with a two-run double for the Mules (12-20, 2-10). Aimee Polimeno earned the victory. She pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out three.
In the second game, Lindsay Gibbons pitched a one-hit shutout for the Bobcats (13-18, 3-9).
 
Baseball

Thomas eliminated from tournament: Thomas College was held to three runs and zero walks in 18 innings Saturday, losing 4-1 to Colby-Sawyer in a winner’s bracket game, and then falling 8-2 to top-seeded Castleton in an elimination game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division tournament in Castleton, Vt.

In the first game, Colby-Sawyer broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Waterville graduate Tim Locke took the tough loss for Thomas. Locke allowed three runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Andy Lapple drove in the winning run for the Chargers, with a double off the glove of leaping third baseman Josh Gray. Thomas had 12 hits, including three by Tom Cameron, but left 12 men on base.

Kevin Keith struck out eight in 8 2/3 innings to earn the win. Greg Doucette got the last out in the ninth for the save.

Castleton pitcher Patrick Riley shut down the Terriers in the second game. Riley threw a six-hitter and didn’t walk a batter. The Spartans had 14 hits and stole five bases. Peter Wagner went 3 for 3 and drew two walks for Castleton. Skowhegan grad Cody Vigue homered for Thomas (25-17).

Bates 7-7, Colby 2-4: Bates scored six unearned runs in the top of the seventh in the opener and Ryan Curit blasted a two-run home run in the second game of a doubleheader sweep in Waterville.

Tom Baroni pitched a complete game in the opener to earn the victory for Bates (20-15, 4-7 in New England Small College Athletic Conference). He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

Colby starter Brady Hesslein pitched into the seventh and allowed just one earned run. Mike Mastrocola homered for the Mules (16-6, 3-8) in Game 1.

Curit hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Bobcats some breathing room in the nightcap.

Albany 4-2, Maine 2-0: Sean Lucas and Greg Lutton combined to pitch 10 shutout innings as the Great Danes beat the Black Bears in the second game to earn a doubleheader sweep in Orono.

Lucas went eight innings, allowing eight hits, while striking out six for Albany (14-26-1, 8-5 in the conference). Lutton pitched two innings, allowing one hit. The Great Danes scored the winning run on an RBI triple by Craig Lepre in the top of the 10th.

For Maine, Shaun Coughlin went eight innings, allowing three hits. Connolly allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two in two innings of work.

In the first game, the Great Danes took a 3-0 lead in the fifth and held on for the win.

Men’s lacrosse

Connecticut College 11, Colby 6: The Mules held a one-goal lead in the second half, but the Camels scored seven straight to pull away for a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal win in New London, Conn.

The Camels improve to 10-5 and face No. 1 Tufts in the semifinals. Colby falls to 9-5.

Stephen Eicher had three goals and an assist for Conn. College.

John Jennings had three goals, while Jonathan McIvor had a goal and an assist for Colby.

New England College 27, UM-Farmington 0: The Pilgrims jumped out to  a 10-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a victory over the Beavers in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinals in Henniker, N.H.

No. 1 NEC improves to 10-6 and advances to play Maine Maritime in the semifinals Wednesday. No. 8 UMF ends the season 2-11.

Track and field

NESCAC championships: Colby College’s Dom Kone won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bates College in Lewiston.

Kone set a meet/facility/school record in the 100, winning in a time of 10.56. Todd O’Brien of Bates set the meet record at 10.65 in 1993.

Kone won the 200 in a time of 21.70, which also set a facility record.

Colby finished eight out of 11 men’s teams. 

For the Colby women, the 400-meter relay team of Brittney Bell, Brittany Reardon, Frances Onyilagha and Annabelle Hicks won the title with a time of 49.58 seconds. Colby finished fifth out of 11 teams with 58 points.

Also Saturday: Skowhegan graduate Becca McCarty pitched a complete game, striking out nine and walking one, to lead the Husson softball team past Castleton St. 4-0 in a NAC tournament game. The victory kept the Eagles in the tournament. McCarty improved to 16-7 on the season. … Winslow High School graduate Christina Massey and Cony High School graduate Bethany Dumas played a key role in the University of Southern Maine women’s track and field team’s victory at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Westfield, Mass.Dumas won the pole vault (10-0), was third in the 100 hurdles (15.6), fifth in the 400 (67.27) and third in the javelin (117-4). Massey, meanwhile, was third in the 400 (59.71), second in the long jump (17-3.5) and third in the high jump (5-2.25).
