AUGUSTA — U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe told a roomful of leather-clad motorcyclists they may look tough on the outside, but on the inside they’re a compassionate bunch.

The Maine Republican joined other top elected officials today at the Blaine House for an annual motorcyclists’ tea. Snowe said the United Bikers of Maine’s annual toy run makes a difference in children’s lives and it shows that tough-looking bikers really have a heart.

Snowe and her husband, former Gov. John McKernan, who also attended, have participated in many of the past toy runs. Snowe’s been on the bikers’ side on the issue of not requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.

Also greeting several dozen bikers were Gov. Paul LePage and U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-2nd District, who also thanked the group for its charity work.
