AUGUSTA — U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe says the new security compact with Afghanistan still leaves important questions unanswered.
The Maine Republican says it doesn’t address how the United States comes to terms with the insurgency in that country without cooperation from Pakistan.
The agreement, announced by President Barack Obama on Tuesday night, allows a possibility of keeping U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014 for purposes of training Afghan forces and targeting al-Qaida. It also says Afghanistan will provide U.S. personnel access to and use of Afghan facilities beyond 2014.
Snowe, who was interviewed at an event today in Augusta, says the 2014 end date “seems open-ended.”
Asked if the U.S. should have a role in Afghanistan, Snowe said “not indefinitely,” but it’s a question that will have to be explored further.
