PITTSFIELD — Police are continuing to look for a man who robbed the Rite Aid pharmacy Thursday evening and was last seen heading north on nearby Interstate 95.

The robber, described as a 5-foot-6-inch to 5-foot-8-inch man weighing from 230 to 250 pounds, did not show a weapon or make any threats, Pittsfield police Officer Michael Cote said.

The pharmacy employee included a GPS device in the white plastic bag the robber gave her to fill with prescription pills.

He said the device activated when the robber left the Somerset Avenue store and showed the robber was headed north on I-95.

Cote would not say how far or to where the device tracked the robber’s vehicle.

The man entered the store about 7:30 p.m. wearing a baseball cap and a dark hooded sweatshirt with the word Maine on the front, and demanded the employee at the pharmacy counter fill a plastic bag with “20s, 30s, and 80s,” Cote said.

The numbers refer to milligrams of dosage of OxyContin and percocet, he said.

Cote said several employees and customers were in the store during the robbery, which he estimated took about two minutes.

Pittsfield police Officer Marty Cochran was at the scene in about eight minutes, Cote said. Somerset County Sheriff’s officers, Maine State Police and an off-duty Bangor officer also assisted.

Cote said police think he may have had a truck waiting near the interstate, which is about 100 yards from the store.

He said a white or silver pickup truck was noticed in the vicinity shortly before the robbery and that the store’s surveillance video is being reviewed.

Cote asked that anyone who saw suspicious activity around the area about 7:30 p.m. to call him at 487-4439, ext. 206.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said nearly every week a pharmacy, convenience store, bank or some other store in Maine is robbed.

“And drugs are behind all of it,” he said.

The same Rite Aid was robbed of drugs in October.

In that one, the man made threats in a note demanding drugs he gave to a male pharmacist.

The robber last fall was described as 5-feet 6-inches to 5-feet 9-inches tall with a medium build, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a baseball hat underneath the hood, black gloves and large dark-colored sunglasses, according to Pittsfield police Chief Steve Emery.

The getaway vehicle was described as a dark sedan with four doors.

No one has been charged in that robbery.
