KENTS HILL — Jenn Machin scored with 7 seconds left in regulation to lift Brunswick to an 11-10 win in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference girls lacrosse game Cony on Friday evening at the Ted Alfond and John Huard turf fields at Kents Hill School.

Machin’s goal gave Brunswick (6-0) the lead for the first time in the second half in a game that featured five ties. Machin took just two shots the entire game and scored both times. Her game-winning shot was a low bouncing ball from 20 yards out on the right side.

“Dakota (Foster) gave me a good pass, I was really shooting blind,” Machin said. “One of our strength’s this season is a tendency to come back in games and pull out the win.”

Cony’s (5-1) defense was superb throughout the game with goalkeeper Katrina Duncan making 10 saves, seven in one-on-one situations.

“This was the best game of lacrosse we have ever played,” Cony coach Gretchen Livingston said. “Every single player on our team contributed, everyone did an exceptional job.”

Cony finished the game with a 28-18 ground ball advantage while Brunswick led on draw control 15-6. The Dragons gained a slight edge in shots, 24-20.

“Cony’s goalie was phenomenal,” Brunswick coach Beth Caputi added. “They had a great defense that took away our attack, they stopped us on plays that we have been scoring on all season.”

Cony has never beaten Brunswick but came close in this game. The Rams jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first half before the Dragons ran four straight goals to take a brief 5-4 lead with 8:13 remaining in the half.

Bayleigh Logan answered quickly for the Rams, scoring less than a minute later off a ground ball steal to tie the game 5 at 7:19. Logan put Cony ahead by hitting the net from the right side before Emily Quirion found the back of the net for a 7-5 advantage.

Foster (five goals) cut the margin to 7-6 just before the half, scoring from 5 yards out off a pass from Corinne O’Connor.

Defense took control in the second half with the two teams going scoreless through the first 10 minutes of the half. Mia Diplock broke the scoring stalemate, finessing a shot past Brunswick keeper Molly Herman (six saves) with 14:57 left in the game for an 8-6 lead.

Once again Brunswick battled back, scoring a pair of goals to knot the game 8-8, the first coming from Machin followed by Suzannah Smith’s goal with 6:38 left.

Cony’s transition game kicked into high gear with 2:55 left when Quirion tossed a lead pass over the Brunswick defense for Chelsea Begin to run under. Begin made an over the shoulder catch, then scored to give the Rams a 9-8 lead.

One minute later Annie Kelly tied the game for Brunswick, but Heather Leet found the net for the Rams with 1:12 remaining, giving Cony a 10-9 advantage. The Dragons continued to push forward when Foster scored on a free position shot with 22 seconds left, setting the stage for Machin after the Dragons won the ensuring draw.

Begin paced the Rams on attack, scoring three goals while Mia Diplock, Logan and Quirion scored two each.
