WINSLOW — A former employee of a trailer manufacturer is under arrest after being accused of selling at least six trailers and pocketing the cash.

Tory Hemphill Joseph, 25, of 5 Rosseau St., Apartment 3, was arrested Friday on a warrant at his residence. The arrest followed more than a month of investigation by multiple agencies, Detective Gina Henderson said.

The investigation began in early April when an employee of ALCOM Inc. — a manufacturer of custom aluminum trailers for recreational use — recognized a trailer for sale on the Craigslist website. The employee showed the listing to ALCOM President Trapper Clark, and they discovered the trailer shown in the ad was unaccounted for, Henderson said.

That same day, ALCOM officials notified Winslow police. Henderson said she worked with the computer crimes unit at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy to determine who had placed the ad.

Their investigation led to Joseph.

“It’s sad because this was a trusted employee,” Henderson said. “They were thinking about promoting this young man into management.”

Henderson said the investigation is ongoing. She wouldn’t comment on ALCOM’s total losses or say how much Joseph may have gained through the alleged sales, but said Joseph may have sold more than investigators currently know.

Henderson said she has interviewed three people who bought stolen trailers. Those trailers have not been seized, and no charges are pending, she said.

“I don’t believe they had any idea at all that these trailers were being sold by someone that shouldn’t have been selling them,” she said.

The theft charge against Joseph is a class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
