BANGOR  — The body of an Army helicopter pilot from Maine who died in Afghanistan is coming home.

Capt. John Brainard III of Newport is expected to arrive at Bangor International Airport on Thursday morning.

The 26-year-old Brainard died on Memorial Day when the helicopter he was piloting went down in Afghanistan. Military officials say there was no enemy activity in the area at the time.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Brainard’s wake is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home in Newport. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Dexter, followed by burial in Plymouth.

Brainard was a 2004 graduate of Foxcroft Academy and a 2008 graduate of the University of Maine.
