NEW PORTLAND — A fire Monday under a mobile home on New Portland Hill Road was extinguished before the structure was fully involved, according to fire department officials.

“All the fire was underneath the trailer,” said Brian Rundlett, New Portland assistant fire chief.

Rundlett said that fire crews removed the skirting from the base of the structure so that they could attack the flames without having to go through the floor of the trailer. The cause of the blaze was not determined.

“It could have been the furnace,” said Rundlett. “It could have been the electrical.”

Rundlett said that there was some heat damage to the bathroom area, but most of the property damage was caused by smoke and water. Officials said that the home is not livable.

“He’s got a lot of cleanup ahead,” said Anson Fire Chief Jeremy Manzer, who was also at the scene.

Homeowner Paul Hilenski called for help at 8:22 a.m. when he noticed smoke coming in through the vents of his mobile home and left the building.

Fire crews spent nearly two hours at the scene.
