SOUTH PORTLAND — Maine realtors say the number of homes sold and their median prices in May both rose from the figures a year earlier.

Maine Real Estate Information System figures show that 1,035 single-family homes were sold in May, a 32 percent increase from the same month a year earlier.

The statistics, taken from a listing of sales from licensees all over the state, also shows the median price on single family homes rose 7.4 percent to $178,000 during the same May-to-May period. The median means half the homes were sold for more money and half for less.

Sheryl Gregory of Homestead Realty in Winthrop says buyers are responding to low interest rates. Other realtors see a transition from a buyers’ market to a more balanced home sales market.
