ATHENS — Fireworks, three-legged races, a dunk tank, water balloon toss and a pig roast all promise a full day of family activities Saturday during the third annual Athens Family Fun Day.

Festivities are set to begin with a parade through town beginning at 9:30 a.m., according to event coordinator Vicky Avery. Route 150 from the post office to Jim’s Variety will be closed to traffic for about 30 minutes for the parade.

Ribbons will be awarded for best bicycles and doll carriages in the parade. There also will be horses, antique cars and parade floats. Parade participants still are needed, Avery said.

Events are sponsored by the Athens Recreation Department.

Gates are scheduled to open at the fairgrounds on Main Street at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

A water slide will be in place until 5 p.m., and a trampoline bungee jump will be open until 6 p.m. All-day wristbands for children will be available for $10 for unlimited sliding and jumping.

There will be a children’s play area, a barnyard, a fly-tying exhibition, face painting and free games.

Events throughout the day are to include a frog jumping contest at 11 a.m. Avery advises participants to bring their own frogs. A family obstacle competition is set for noon. Sign-up for the hot shot basketball game will take place at 1 p.m.

The Athens Volunteer Fire Department will set up games with fire hoses and water at 2 p.m., followed by peanut races, in which children and adults are challenged to push peanuts with their noses.

The pig roast is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. The meal costs $6 a plate or $20 per family.

A pie auction is set for 6 p.m., with children’s arm wrestling at 7 p.m., a “win it in a minute” game at 8 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m.
