FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington recently announced events beginning Aug. 2. All events are free and open to the public unless stated otherwise.

* Sunset Kayak at Bear Pond in Turner, 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, Fitness & Recreation Center. Participants can explore a local lake by kayak and watch the sunset with a campfire and s’mores at the end. Appropriate for all ability levels. Bring kayak if possible. A limited number of kayaks are available for rent. Meet at the FRC at 5:15 p.m. Minimum age of 13 or if younger than 13, allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision. * Mountain biking trip, 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, Fitness & Recreation Center. Evening trip to Carrabassett River Trial Ride. Bring a bike if you have one; helmets are required. FRC has 19 helmets and 10 bikes available for rent. Meet at the FRC at 4:45 p.m., Carrabassett River Trail. Cost is $5 for non-members and free for UMF students and FRC members. * Evening geocaching, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, UMF Fitness & Recreation Center. Use a GPS tracker to locate hidden treasures and beat the clock before other teams do it first. For more information, email james.d.toner@maine.edu or call 778-7495.

* Intro to canoeing, 5:30 p.m., Wilson Lake. Join FRC Director Jim Toner in this class/clinic that will provide hands-on instruction on the fundamentals of paddling a canoe. Participants will learn basic paddling strokes including the forward paddle, J-stroke, draw, sweep, and pry to appropriately maneuver a canoe; learn how to “read” a river; re-enter a capsized or swamped boat; identify safety concerns and more. Canoes, paddles and personal floatation devices provided. Space is limited to 12. Meet at the FRC at 5:15 p.m. Minimum age of 13 or if younger than 13, allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision. Cost is $5 for non-members and free for UMF students and FRC members.
