AUGUSTA — Firefighters were called to the Kennebec River on Monday when a teenager out for a swim got swept downriver.

The unidentified teen and juveniles who were with him and assisted in his rescue were not hurt, Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette said.

Firefighters were called to the east side of the river around 3 p.m. after a teen reportedly was caught in the current. Audette said the teens were swimming in front of Mill Park when one of them drifted with the current. The teen’s two friends grabbed a log from shore and assisted the drifting teen.

All three made their way to a low tide area where they could stand. Augusta Rescue helped lead the teens to shore.

Audette said there is a strong current in that area of the river, adding that it’s not a good idea to go swimming there.
