BOSTON — More than 325 buildings in New England – including 20 in Maine – are competing in a national contest to improve energy efficiency.
The buildings are among more than 3,200 across the country competing in this year’s National Building Competition.
In Maine the competitors include three Biddeford schools, the Island Institute, Sears, two senior care facilities and many buildings, including courthouses, owned by the U.S. General Services Administration
New England, the competitors include 161 buildings owned by Webster Bank, 51 buildings owned and managed by the U.S. General Services Administration and 21 buildings owned by the town of West Hartford, Conn.
This is the third year that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has hosted the competition.
Competitors use an EPA Energy Star online tool to measure and track their building’s monthly energy consumption.
In 2011, West High School in Manchester, N.H., was the New England winner by reducing energy use by 16 percent, saving almost $75,000 in energy bills.
