AUGUSTA — A Miles for Mills car/bike cruise — featuring custom classic cars, muscle cars, modern vehicles and motorcycles — is scheduled Sunday at the VA Maine Healthcare Systems-Togus.

The fundraiser, organized by Tim Harriman of South China, benefits Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, who lost both arms and legs April 10 after he stepped on an explosive in Afghanistan, and the Mills Family Fund.

Harriman is an uncle of Mills’ wife, Kelsey, who grew up in the Gardiner area.

“Travis is recovering nicely at Walter Reed and has begun walking on his own and learning to adjust to his new life with prosthetics,” said Tricia Harriman of Augusta, an aunt of Kelsey.

The ride ends at the Owls Head Transportation Museum, where participants can watch the Wings & Wheels Spectacular & Aerobatic Airshow taking place this weekend.

Cost of the car/bike cruise is $20, and registration begins at 7 a.m. The ride itself starts at 10 a.m. and will be escorted at the start by Augusta police.

Tim Harriman is asking that participants arrive early so veterans at the Togus hospital can see the vehicles before the start. He also said police and sheriff’s deputies fromseveral departments will be escorting the ride.

A Memorial Day 5k fundraiser event in Augusta organized by other members of the Harriman family brought in more than $13,000 for the fund.

More information about Sunday’s event is available online at travismills.org or by calling Tim Harriman at 441-1359.
