AUGUSTA — Nearly 30 Maine veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are receiving medals for their service.

Gov. Paul LePage is presenting them with Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medals during a ceremony today at the State House.

The medal is the state’s official recognition of Maine veterans who were wounded during combat and were authorized for U.S. military Purple Heart medals.

Additional ceremonies will be held today at veterans homes in Caribou, Bangor, Machias, South Paris and Scarborough.

Today is National Purple Heart Day.
