WARREN — Police are investigating what led to the shooting of a central Maine man early Tuesday morning.

A 47-year-old unidentified man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison said in a news release.

The victim was expected to be taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The man was listed in stable condition at Pen Bay, Dennison said.

Neither she nor Knox County District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau could provide an update on the victim’s condition Tuesday afternoon.

Officials also declined identify the man who was shot, saying only that he was “apparently from the Augusta area.”

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after a fight with a resident inside a home at an unspecified location. Dennison said the victim had been shot in the chest with a handgun.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon. Rushlau said investigators will complete their work and provide information about the shooting to the District Attorney’s office, a process he expects to occur “quickly.”

Rushlau on Tuesday declined to answer additional questions about the shooting. Dennison did not respond to a request for additional information.
