AUGUSTA — About 30 Maine veterans were presented with the Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medal by Gov. Paul LePage in a ceremony in the State House Hall of Flags Tuesday. First lady Ann LePage, Acting Adjutant General Col. James Campbell and Director of Veterans’ Services Peter Ogden joined the governor.

According to a press release, the awards were presented by the state as recognition of Purple Heart designations the veterans received for wounds suffered while serving in combat.

LePage also issued a proclamation declaring Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day in Maine, coinciding with the National Purple Heart Day.

In addition to the Hall of Flags, ceremonies also took place in Maine veterans homes across the state. Nearly 80 Silver Star Honorable Service Medals were awarded to Maine veterans who served in wars going back to World War II.
