TOGUS — The second-in-command of the VA Maine Healthcare System has been promoted to the hospital’s top position.

Ryan Lilly, 37, replaces Susan MacKenzie as the hospital system’s director. She has filled the position in an interim role since February, when former director Brian Stiller left for a position in New York.

Lilly, who has served as associate director of the system comprised of the Togus hospital, seven other community clinics and three access points in Maine since 2006, will oversee the hospital system.

It serves more than 39,000 veterans with a operating budget of more than $259 million, according to a Department of Veterans Affairs release.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Ryan in his current position … and have been impressed by his knowledge of the unique challenges faced by Maine veterans and their caregivers,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-2nd District, in a statement on Friday. “His experience, skills and character make him an excellent slection for this position.”
