ROME — The search for four missing hikers ended Friday when they were found by game wardens far off course but unhurt after four hours of hiking in the Kennebec Highlands.

Warden Steve Allaire said the four hikers — two 15-year-old girls and two women ages 76 and 58 — started their hike around 10:30 a.m. at the Sanders Hill Trail on Watson Pond Road. The group intended to walk to the summit of Sanders Hill before continuing to the Kennebec Highlands trail and back to the parking lot on Watson Pond Road.

“Somehow they got turned around at the top and ended up in New Sharon,” Allaire said.

One of the hikers used a cellphone to call for help. A Warden Service plane found the women and directed wardens in vehicles to their location on Roxy Rand Road, about 4 1/2 miles from where the hikers had entered the woods.

None of the hikers was injured, Allaire said.

“They were smart,” he said. “They stayed put after they made the call.”
