PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A four-time convicted felon who said he was preparing for doomsday has been arrested after federal authorities say he got his wife to buy 10 guns on his behalf.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 47-year-old Peter Laporte, of Warwick, was arrested Thursday on charges including being a felon in possession of firearms.

Authorities say LaPorte and his wife went to a gun shop in Richmond on July 30 and told the clerk they were planning for doomsday and planned to build a bunker in Maine.

They say he advised his wife to buy four 9mm pistols, a .357 revolver, two semi-automatic assault rifles, a Remington 30-6 rifle and two shotguns. He was arrested when he returned to the shop later to pick up ammunition.
