CASTINE — Each year the Penobscot Navy League Council, in partnership with Maine Maritime Academy, conducts afternoon sunset cruises of Penobscot Bay on the historic schooner Bowdoin. Proceeds are used for scholarships for outstanding students in the Naval ROTC program at Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Maine and to recognize outstanding Merchant Marine graduates at MMA.
Funds are also used to recognize the Northern New England Coast Guard Sailor of the Year and to support two Naval Sea Cadet units in Bangor and Madison.
This year the afternoon sunset cruises will be Monday, Sept. 17, and Tuesday, Sept. 18. Cost is $35 per person. Passengers are asked to be at the Castine Town Dock by 3:30 p.m. to ensure a 4 p.m. departure. Cruises typically last two to two-and-a-half hours. A light snack and beverages will be provided.
For reservations, call Chris Kopang, President of the Penobscot Navy League Council at 862-3151.
Because the Bowdoin can only accommodate 35 passengers each day, this event sells out quickly. Reservations must be made no later than Monday, Sept. 10.
