JEFFERSON—Two people were hurt Friday in a crash on Route 17.

The drivers, John Jackie, 65, of Thomaston, and Christine Urquhart, 63, of Jefferson, were both hurt in the crash, said Deputy Scott Hayden of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Jackie was taken by ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Urquhart declined an ambulance, but Hayden believes she went by private vehicle to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

“They appeared to be minor,” Hayden said of the injuries.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m., as Jackie was driving his 1996 Lincoln Town Car west on Route 17, which is also known as the Rockland Road. Jackie went to make a left turn into Maine Hydroponic Supply and turned in front of Urquhart’s eastbound 2010 Jeep Liberty, Hayden said. Urquhart swerved but was unable to avoid the collision.

“It was almost a head-on,” Hayden said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The airbags in both vehicles went off.

“The airbags probably saved them,” Hayden said.

Route 17 was reduced to one lane in the area for some time as rescuers tended to the injured and the vehicles were removed.

Hayden said both vehicles were badly damaged. The Town Car is likely totaled.

He said neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash.

“He just didn’t see her coming,” Hayden said.
