A Canadian man died Saturday night when his motorcycle apparently hit a moose on U.S. Route 201 in Dennistown Plantation, immediately north of Jackman, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

A passer-by reported the accident to the department about 8:34 p.m., police said in a news release. Two of the department’s officers found the rider, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a silver 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was damaged beyond repair.

The rider, who was wearing a helmet, appeared to have been thrown from the motorcycle when it hit the moose, the release said. The moose was not found.

Police are withholding the victim’s name until his releatives have been notified.

Sheriff’s deputies investigated the crash with assistance at the crash site from the U.S. Border Patrol and Jackman Fire/Ambulance. U.S. Customs and Canada Customs also assisted in the investigation, which is ongoing.
