MONMOUTH — Russell Neal scored an unassisted goal with 23 minutes left in regulation to break a tie and lift the Monmouth Academy boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mountain Valley in a Mountain Valley Conference game Saturday morning.

“I was very pleased with the exception of the first 12 minutes of the game,” Monmouth cach Joe Fletcher said. “But then we settled in.”

Mountain Valley opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game on a goal by Josh Rainey.

Kyle Fletcher scored with 15 minutes left in the half to tie the game for Monmouth (1-0-0). Drew McFarren had an assist on the goal.

Kasey Smith had five saves to earn the victory.

Hampden 6, Messalonskee 1: Tristan Gardiner scored the first three goals of the game and the Broncos rolled to the Eastern A win in Oakland.

Ignacio Cires De Orbe, Cam Scott and Erik Hanson also scored for Hampden (1-0), which had 26 shots on net.

Kevin McCarthy scored the lone goal for Messalonskee (0-1) off a throw-in from Alex Runser.

Hall-Dale 6, Mt. Abram 1: Nat Crocker and Zac McNaughton each scored two goals as the Bulldogs opened their season with an MVC win over the Roadrunners in Salem.

Colin Lush and Zac Plummer also scored for Hall-Dale, while Spencer Shagoury, Crocker, Lush and Steven Longfellow each had an assist. Sam Shepherd and Brian Allen combined for three saves.

Cortland Talmage scored and Tristen Dyer had 17 saves for Mt. Abram.

Monmouth 3, Mountain Valley 1: Kylie Kemp scored three times as the Mustangs won their season opener, which was delayed an hour and 45 minutes by a thunder and lightning storm, on Friday in Rumford.

Melissa Brassard, Sabrina Beck and Sammy Grandahl each had an assist for Monmouth (1-0-0). Adrianna Gonzalez stopped seven shots to earn the win.

Eliza Buccina scored the lone goal for Mountain Valley (0-1-0). Karen Flaherty stopped nine shots for the Falcons.
