NORRIDGEWOCK — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and New Balance manufacturing officials are planning to make the case to the U.S. trade representative for continuing current trade tariffs on imported sneakers.

Trade Representative Ron Kirk is joining Michaud on Thursday in touring a New Balance plant in Norridgewock, one of three communities in Maine with New Balance facilities.

Michaud calls it a “unique opportunity” for Kirk to hear directly from U.S. workers.

New Balance officials worry that the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement that’s currently being negotiated will eliminate tariffs that allow U.S.-made shoes to compete.
