More than 3,000 customers in some Augusta-area communities lost power for a few hours during the wee hours Wednesday morning after a failure at a substation, according to Central Maine Power.

CMP spokesman John Carroll said the power loss started shortly after midnight for some customers and the peak number of outages occurred about 2 a.m. In all, 3,145 customers in Augusta, Farmingdale, Gardiner and Hallowell were affected, Carroll said.

Power was restored by about 4:30 a.m. after crews fixed the problem at the substation in Farmingdale, he said.
