A president, whether Republican or Democrat, is hamstrung and unable to effectively do the business of government with a Congress in gridlock.

A huge majority of Republican members of Congress have foolishly pledged allegiance to lobbyist Grover Norquist, signing a pledge to never vote in favor of any tax increase.

Fear of retaliation by Norquist for violation of the pledge has contributed largely to gridlock by limiting the ability of pledge signers to compromise in legislative matters.

The inability to compromise is likely the primary roadblock to resolving our economic difficulties at this time. It is well understood that the neo-conservative Republican Party of today expects all members to pledge allegiance to Norquist.

A great question we need to ask the three contenders for Olympia Snowe’s Senate seat is, “do you intend to limit your ability to compromise by pledging allegiance to lobbyist Grover Norquist?”
