LITCHFIELD — The Historical Society of Litchfield has received a $2,057 grant through the Historical Records Collections Grant Program administered by the Maine Historical Records Advisory Board.

The historical society used the grant money to microfilm 20 old, fragile, handwritten leather-bound ledgers. The dates of the ledgers start in 1795, the year Litchfield was incorporated, to 1903. The volumes contain information about polls, tax valuations, tax paid, poor farm accounts, civil war information, bills of sales and deeds. The historical society welcomes information about the location of a magazine powder house referenced in a 1815 ledger.

The original records are stored in archival boxes in the town vault. The microfilms have been copied in digital format for the Shorey History Center and will be made available to the Maine State Archives for their collection. For more information, visit www.HistoricalSocietyofLitchfieldMaine.org.

The grant program is coordinated in Maine by the State Archives. For more information, call Janet Roberts at 287-5791 or e-mail [email protected]
