KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Joey Diamond redirected a Ben Hutton shot from the blueline midway through the third period to lift the University of Maine men’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Army in the consolation game of the 2012 Ice Breaker Tournament on Saturday.
Maine (1-2-0) trailed 2-0 before it scored three goals in 2 minutes, 27 seconds of the second period.
Mark Anthoine, Will Merchant and Stu Higgins all scored to give Maine a 3-2 lead.
Maine held a 54-24 advantage in shots.
Rob Tadazak had 50 saves for the Black Knights (0-2-0).
Field Hockey
Thomas 2, Colby-Sawyer 0: Belgrade native Miranda Tinsman scored the only goal the Terriers would need 27 minutes into the game in a North Atlantic Conference victory in New London, N.H.
Bre Girard also scored for Thomas (5-8). Senior Ally Kennedy of Winthrop had an assist.
Amherst 6, Colby 0: Katie McMahon scored two goals and added an assist as No. 15 Amherst rolled in Amherst, Mass.
The Lord Jeffs (7-3) held a 29-3 shot advantage.
Alex Phillie also scored two goals for Amherst.
Michelle Burt had 12 saves for the Mules (4-7).
Castleton State 5, UMF 3: Kealy Chipman scored two goals and Rachel Preusser added another to lead the Spartans in Castleton, Vt.
Mercedes Maltbie and Brandi Whittemore also scored for Castleton (6-0).
Lily Barry scored two goals and Meghan Hughes of Pittsfield added an assist for UMF (5-6).
Women’s soccer
Thomas 2, UMPI 1: Elizabeth Goodall scored in the final minute of play to lift the Terriers to the non-conference win in Waterville.
Gardiner graduate Jenn Day assisted on the goal and also scored a goal for the Thomas.
Kate Thibodeau made seven saves for the Terriers (4-10-0).
Amherst 4, Colby 0: Megan Kim, Amanda Brisco, Mel Stier and Sarah Duffy each scored to lead the Lord Jeffs (8-1-1) to the New England Small College Athletic Conference victory in Amherst.
Emily Brook had four saves for Colby (7-4-0).
Women’s hockey
Quinnipiac 5, Maine 2: Kelly Babstock scored two goals and Chelsea Laden had 19 saves to lead the Bobcats in Hamden, Conn.
Nicole Connery and Breann Frykas also scored for Quinnipiac (2-1-1).
Jennifer Moore and Tori Pasquariello scored for Maine (0-2-0).
Men’s soccer
Thomas 4, UMPI 2: Maranacook graduate Dakota Duplissie scored two goals to lead the Terriers to the non-conference win in Waterville.
Khamis Lightbourne also scored for Thomas while Josh Phelps had two assists.
Winston Trott made two saves in goal for Thomas (9-2-2). UMaine-Presque Isle is 6-8-0.
Amherst 2, Colby 0: Brian Morgan scored three minutes into the game and Julien Aoyama added another with 2:27 left in regulation to lead the Lord Jeffs in Amherst, Mass.
Spencer Noon had an assist for Amherst (10-0-1).
Colby goalkeeper Cody Funkhouser had one save for Colby (3-6-2).
Cross country
Erskine graduate and Bowdoin junior Sam Seekins finished first in the State of Maine championships at the University of Southern Maine. Seekins finished the 5-mile race in 25 minutes, 5 seconds. Bates edged Bowdoin by a point for the title followed by Colby in third place. Charlie Coffman, Jeff Hale and Chase Brown finished 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively, for Colby.
Erskine graduate Jackson Fortin led the University of Maine at Farmington by finishing in a tie for 32nd. Cony graduate Briar Beede finished 36th, running for USM, while William Janakis placed 38th to lead Thomas.
Bates won the women’s title while USM’s Molly Carl placed first overall, finishing the 5k race in 18:16. Bowdoin took second followed by Colby.
Berol Dewdney finished third overall for Colby while teammate Eva Lauer placed eighth. Cony graduate Morgan Beede finished 16th for USM while Selena Sykes led UMF with a 41st place finish.
Crew
The Colby women’s varsity finished 18th out of 29 boats at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta in Worcester, Mass.
The Mules finished in a time of 17 minutes, 4.469 seconds. Holy Cross won the event in 15:29.658.
The women’s varsityboat was comprised of: Molly Colman (coxswain), Becca Herman, Justine Seraganian, Annalisa Tester, Olivia Collins, Jessie Lunde, Molly Clark, Megan Cullinane, and Astrid Moore.
The Colby men finished 11th out of 27 boats at the Regatta. The Mules finished in a time of 14 minutes, 36.601 seconds over the 2,000-meter course. Holy Cross won the event in 13:51.577. Members of the varsity boat included: Camille Angelo (coxswain), James Rabjohns, Timothy Dutton, Nate Krump, Noah Teachey, Pat Adams, David Watson, Sam Zoloth, and Daniel Meyer.
Volleyball
Connecticut College 3, Colby 0: The visiting Mules were led by Natalie Roy, who finished with a match-high 27 digs to go with six kills, but it wasn’t enough for Colby, which lost 25-11, 25-14, 25-22.
Emily Varni had 20 digs for the Camels.
Also Saturday: Jess Poulin of Albion had 10 saves as the Husson women’s soccer team lost to Castleton State College 1-0 in Bangor . . . Oakland native Hannah Thornberg had an assist for the Endicott field hockey team, which blanked Gordon 3-0 in Beverly, Mass. … Waterville native Brian Potter had six saves for the Husson men’s soccer team, which stopped Castleton State 4-1 at Boucher Field in Bangor . . . Maranacook graduate David Clough scored two goals to lead Maine Maritime to a 5-0 win against Green Mountain College.
