In 2009, my grandfather, Richard “Duke” Caron passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. A Marine and a Korean war veteran, Pepere was buried in the Maine Veterans Cemetery.

He provided my mom, Cathy Nadeau, Democratic candidate for the Maine House of Representatives District 54 with a deep respect for our veterans. In fact, their encouragement was one of the main reasons I joined the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating Winslow High in 2002.

Every year since my grandfather passed away, my mom joins a group of veterans and volunteers on Memorial Day and places more than 30,000 flags on the graves of the brave men and women who are buried at the VA cemeteries in Augusta.

My mother has served the citizens of Winslow for the past 20 years, and I believe her experience, work ethic and true caring nature are what we need in Augusta.
