AUGUSTA — Kennebec County Spirit of America held an event on Oct. 15 at the Augusta Elks Lodge 964 to honor local volunteers.

The following individuals and groups were honored at the event:

* The Albion Volunteer Fire Department.

* Don Brown of Augusta was honored for his years of volunteer service to the WABK Love Fund.

* Belgrade: Fred Cole, who has transported veterans from their homes to the VA Maine Healthcare System at Togus and back for 15 years; and Carl Yeaton, a former selectman who has served on many town committees.

* Benton: Randall Liberty is county sheriff and involved in the D.A.R.E program.

* Chelsea: Barbara Skehan has served on the school board and charter commission.

* China: Joann Austin has served on several town committees and as a selectwoman; and Richard and Barbara Dowe, Robert and Madeline Dowe, Sheldon and Joyce Goodine, Gloria and Joseph Pinette, Barbara and Al Poulin and Milford and Carol Thomas, who have all dedicated service to various groups.

* Clinton: China Firefighter and Rescue Association has helped the community for more than 70 years.

* Fayette: Eric and Carlene Davenport have raised funds for the Keep Me Warm program.

* Gardiner: Nick Alberding has served as president of Gardiner Area Board of Trade for the past few years.

* Litchfield: Pat Bailey conducts weekly rehearsals for the Carol Bailey String Band and chorus; Scott and Penny Bennington have donated to Litchfield’s fuel fund; Darryl Ellis has secured money for the fire department through the many grants he has written; Eldon Harvey helps people with welding, mowing and moving; Earl Lamoreau helps when the town needs a warden and moderator; and Lisa and Ron Ridley recently held a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis featuring a pig roast and band; Beth Roberts has dedicated more than 30 years to missionary service in foreign countries; Judy Rogers has served on the planning board for more than 12 years and allows hiking and sledding on the family farm; Fay Smith has volunteered at the VA Maine Healthcare System for 50 years; Tim Tracy maps out snowmobile trails; Dot Vachon is leader of the Senior Steppers line dancing group; Donald Vannah is a handyman who cares for the Plains Cemetery; and Darryl Zeleniak sets up an annual Christmas display.

* Manchester: Arlene Gagnon volunteers at her church and is involved with Rotary Club, Meals on Wheels and other groups; Manchester Healthy Futures collects donations to help a food bank and fuel assistance fund; Austen Paynes Jones is a member of Manchester Junior Firefighter; and Vicki Oliver leads youth group and organizes suppers for her church.

* Mount Vernon Fire Department has served its community for more than 85 years.

* Oakland: Ramona Freeman has served on town committees and has been active with the Lions Club and food bank.

* Pittston: Trudy Brown helps people in the community.

* Randolph United Methodist Church runs a thrift shop and other projects.

* Readfield: Robin Lint, Deborah Nichols and Teresa Shaw organized a benefit supper to assist the local fuel assistance program; John Perry helps town committees and other local groups; Readfield Auxiliary assists with the local annual heritage day celebration; and Milton Wright has served on a number of town committees and boards.

* Vassalboro: Holly Weidner has been involved in several town committees, the grange and farmers market.

* Vienna: Carole O’Connell has researched and organized events for the historical society.

* Waterville: David and Kim Hallee help in the city’s South End.

* West Gardiner: Merton Hickey has served as selectman for more than 25 years.
