Driver injured in Route 27 accident allegedly distracted

DRESDEN — A distracted driver was injured Wednesday when her car veered off the road and hit a utility pole on Route 27, police said.

Nicole Fowler, 25, of Edgecomb, was taken by ambulance to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Jason Nein of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened about 8 a.m. near Carriage Court as Fowler drove a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Gardiner Road, which is Route 27.

“She became distracted for some reason, crossed the southbound lane, went off the road and traveled along the southbound shoulder until she hit a utility pole,” Nein said.

The impact broke the pole, which caused power lines to fall across the road, Nein said. The road was closed for a little more than an hour as traffic was diverted through a nearby mobile home park.

Nein said it appears power was disrupted to just one unoccupied home.

The car was destroyed, Nein said. Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash, but Nein noted the speed limit in the area is 55 mph.

Fowler had not been charged as of this afternoon.
