I heard a small business representative say something quite astounding recently. His idea is that Americans should send a message to Washington by disaffiliating with political parties.

If millions of citizens changed their voter registration to “independent” or “unaffiliated,” we would be letting Congress know that they have lost our party loyalty and now we want to see performance. Let them know their party system is in jeopardy of becoming very irrelevant.

So let’s start a movement right here in Central Maine. Take 15 minutes to vote a new way. Vote with our feet by going to our town office and changing our voter registration. We can always switch back later.

If thousands of voters in Maine dropped their party affiliation, the news organizations would report it. Others would hear about what we are doing and follow our example. Then maybe, just maybe, Congress would listen to their constituents.
