Monmouth fire leaves woman homeless on Tuesday

MONMOUTH — One person is homeless after a fire damaged a house Tuesday on Route 135.

Monmouth Fire Chief Dan Roy said the fire broke out shortly before 1:30 p.m. at 627 Route 135 and probably was sparked by combustibles around a metal chimney attached to a wood stove.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

“It was a good stop,” Roy said. “I think the house is salvageable.”

The 1 1/2-story rental house is owned by Mark Rolfe and Mark Griswold. Celine Gagnon began renting the house within the past few weeks, Roy said. Firefighters were able to save most of Gagnon’s belongings, including furniture and a computer Gagnon uses for work.

“Most of the fire was contained to the enclosure (around the chimney) and spread up into the attic space,” Roy said.

He said smoke was billowing out of an eave when firefighters arrived. Once inside, crews found flames around the chimney.

Firefighters from Leeds, Wales and Winthrop helped Monmouth control the fire within an hour. Crews spent more than three hours cleaning up after it.
