AUGUSTA — The United Way of Kennebec Valley raised more than $1.5 million this year to donate to charities across the area.

The achievement was announced Thursday when the organization held its annual wrap-up event at Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta.

The group raised $1,545,000, which exceeded its goal by $45,000, according officials. The fundraising concluded with a $1,700 check generated during a bowl-a-thon held by Families Matter last fall.

The United Way will disperse the money to its partnering programs in 2013.

Local restaurants donated food for the wrap-up event and Bill Tozier performed live music. Key volunteers and businesses were recognized throughout the evening.
