WATERVILLE — A man and woman accused of shoplifting snack cakes from Save-A-Lot were chased down by police and arrested Thursday.

The man’s stepbrother, in an unrelated incident, was arrested later that night for allegedly threatening family members with a kitchen knife.

A Save-A-Lot store clerk called police at 4:47 p.m. Thursday and reported that he was chasing shoplifters out of the store and down the street, Patrol Sgt. Alden Weigelt of the Waterville police department said.

Police found Joshua Noble, 32, of 25 Spruce St., hiding behind the corner of a house near Park and Winter streets after chasing him through backyards and woodlots, according to Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

After a short struggle, he was handcuffed, arrested and charged with refusing to submit to arrest and detention, Rumsey said.

While being taken to Kennebec County jail, Noble “became very uncooperative and began slamming himself into the cage between the officer and himself and trying to kick out the window,” Rumsey said. Rumsey said Noble also threatened to Save-A-Lot employees.

Officers subdued Noble with pepper spray and charged him with terrorizing, Rumsey said.

He said an officer arrested the woman, Marie Towers, 33, of 11 Union St., when he found her hiding behind a trash container near Handy Ma’am Housecleaning Service.

Rumsey said she was charged with refusing to submit to arrest and theft. According to Rumsey, video from the store’s security camera shows Towers stealing a $10 box of Little Debbie snack cakes.

Noble and Tower are both scheduled to appear in Waterville District Court on March 19.

Noble’s step-brother, Zachary Larrabee, 28, of Spruce Street, was arrested at 2 a.m. Friday and charged with criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, felony assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Rumsey said Larrabee came home intoxicated and had a confrontation with his stepfather and mother. Rumsey said Larrabee held a kitchen knife in his hand while committing assault, but that no there no injuries that required medical treatment.

Larrabee is scheduled to appear in Kennebec Superior Court on March 12.
