STANDISH — Rachel Pelletier of Winslow recently completed a weeklong service trip to Guatemala sponsored by Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. In cooperation with Partners in Development (PID) of Ipswich, Mass., three faculty members and a 20-member student team volunteered in a village three hours west of Guatemala City.

Nursing students helped to staff the medical clinic, while others built a concrete-block emergency house for a homeless family of seven and a multi-family concrete-block latrine for local villagers.

The group also ran a children’s program for 150 participants and distributed roughly 1,250 lbs. of humanitarian supplies. Saint Joseph’s College has sent volunteer teams to Guatemala for the past nine years. Pelletier is a nursing student at the college.
