RYE, N.H. — A proposal to regulate surf camps on beaches in Rye, N.H., is creating some waves among surfers.

The town proposes amending the beach ordinance to restrict certain activities without prior permission from the Board of Selectmen.

Those activities include summer camps, surf camps, and lessons or rentals for surfing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and other water activities.

The Portsmouth Herald reports surfers expressed concerns that the selectboard is trying to control who uses the beach and for what purposes.

Selectman Craig Mussleman says the issue is about making sure that those people running the camps have insurance and that the town is not held liable if someone is hurt.

Residents vote on the proposal in March.
