Two local crashes injure four people
AUGUSTA — Four people were taken to the hospital after two accidents on city streets in recent days.

Among those injured were Danielle Abbott, 30, of Augusta, and two passengers, John Gagnon Jr., 27, of Manchester, and 24-year-old Jesse Hanson, of Augusta, all of whom were injured in three-vehicle crash Tuesday night on Bangor Street.

The fourth injury occurred Wednesday morning when Robert Sherwood, 47, of Chelsea, drove a car into a utility pole on Townsend Road.

All four were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, said Augusta police Lt. Christopher Massey.

Tuesday’s crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. near the Quimby Street intersection as Abbott drove her 2005 Dodge Neon south on Bangor Street. Massey said the Neon drifted over the center line and into the path of a 2010 Dodge pickup being driven north on Bangor Street by James Alexander, 47, of Greenfield.

The Neon hit the pickup on the driver’s side. Massey said the impact spun the Neon back into the southbound lane, where it was hit by a southbound 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by Eric Tracy, 23, of Augusta.

Neither Alexander nor Tracy was injured in the crash.

Traffic on Bangor Street was reduced to one lane for some time as emergency workers tended to the injured and removed the cars.

Police continue to investigate the crash, including what caused Abbott to cross the center line, Massey said.

Sherwood was injured around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday as he drove his 2000 Hyundai Elantra east on Townsend Road. Massey said Sherwood went off the left side the road and hit a utility pole to avoid a car that was turning onto Townsend Street.

The Elantra was badly damaged, Massey said. The utility pole sustained minor damage.
