In a nation with about 310 million firearms, according to a Congressional Research service in November, why can’t we start utilizing them in places that are fairly defenseless but necessary to our nation?

Let’s take them out of the hands of those who have intent of harming others and place them into the hands that teach and look out for our children.

We have seen the horrific massacre in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and nobody wants that to ever happen again in any school.

That is why it is time to start arming able teachers and allowing schools to be better ready for criminals who seek to kill innocent children. Education is the key for a healthy future for the next generation of Americans. That is why it is necessary to protect it.

In Maine, Sen. David Burns, R-Whiting, has proposed a bill that would require school employees carrying concealed firearms to take a firearms training course and psychological exam.

In addition, to begin to bring down gun violence without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens, we can begin to regulate high-capacity magazines, and perform more intense background checks that would stop criminals or mentally ill from purchasing firearms.

Now it is time to do something for our school, and our children. Let’s give teachers the feeling of security of knowing that they have the ability to slow down or stop any evil mind from coming in and harming their students. Let’s give students the feeling of security and make schools a safe place again so we can ensure that all students have a bright future.
