WASHINGTON — Peter Ackerman, an 11th-grade student at Cony High School in Augusta, was named third prize winner in C-SPAN’s national 2013 StudentCam competition.

Ackerman will receive $750 for his documentary, “College: America’s Gateway,” about the student loan crisis, which will air on C-SPAN at 6:50 a.m. Eastern Time on April 16.

The national competition invites middle and high school students to produce a five- to- eight minute documentary on a national policy issue.

This year, students were asked to answer the question, “What’s the most important issue the president should consider in 2013?” C-SPAN received 1,893 video submissions from more than 3,500 students. Documentaries were judged by a panel of C-SPAN education representatives and evaluated based on the thoughtful examination of the competition’s theme, quality of expression, inclusion of varying sides of the documentary’s topic, and effective incorporation of C-SPAN programming, according to a news release from C-SPAN.
