PORTLAND — Fire stations in Portland are collecting rebuilding tools and supplies for a relief effort aimed at helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Maine Helps, a group of Maine volunteers supported by the Portland Fire Department, is collecting items to help storm victims who are still trying to reclaim and rehabilitate their homes in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York, that were heavily damaged by last October’s hurricane.
On Saturday, fire stations in Portland are serving as collection points where citizens can drop off any of the needed items, ranging from commercial grade dehumidifiers and propane space heaters to hammers, work gloves and painting supplies.
The collected materials will be shipped to distribution centers in New York.
