VASSALBORO — The Vassalboro Business Association is spearheading an effort to erect American flags on power poles that line the main streets of North and East Vassalboro this year from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The town has entered into an agreement with FairPoint Communications and Central Maine Power that will enable up to 100 flags to be displayed. Purchasing the flags and brackets will cost approximately $50 per pole. Flags must meet specifications set by the utilities.

The Vassalboro Fire Department has offered to hang the brackets and flags.

Costs for flags and brackets for 100 poles in one year would be prohibitive, so the group will start small and grow the project over the next few years. This year, the organization hopes to fund at least 25 flags from funds raised by the group last year. They hope individuals and businesses might be interested in making donations to fund a flag or two. The VBA will use funds they earn from the Ducky Derby and Vassalboro Days on Sept. 7 this year to purchase additional flags for next year.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a flag should call Linda Titus at 873-2108.
