Fight injures intruder, homeowner’s partner

PALERMO — A resident of a Carrs Corner Road home battled an out-of-control intruder early Wednesday morning, and the resulting injuries sent both men to separate hospitals, police said.

Deputy Chief Jeffery Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said the sound of smashing glass awoke the homeowner and her male partner just after 4 a.m. Wednesday, and they found an intruder in their home.

“It resulted in a physical confrontation between the intruder and the homeowner’s male partner,” Trafton said. “The intruder had to be restrained. Luckily the complainant has a relative who is a Maine state trooper who lives about a mile away, and members of her family called him and he was first on scene. It took the trooper and deputies to restrain this young man because of the condition he was in.”

Trafton said investigators suspect — but have not confirmed — that the home invader was on the drug known as bath salts, “because his behavior was so erratic.”

The homeowner was not injured, he said, and the man who had fought the intruder was taken to a local hospital with injuries.

Trafton identified the intruder only as a 30-year-old man from Knox, and would not provide the suspect’s name because charges had not been filed. The man remained at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta on Wednesday afternoon, Trafton said.
