AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Greg Ladd picked up his second win of the season and Nils Carlson had three hits and three RBI to help the Colby College baseball team to a 6-3 win over Thomas College in a battle of local rivals in Florida on Friday.

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Thomas held off a seventh-inning rally by Colby to take a 4-3 victory.

Luke Duncklee, Tim Corey, and Tyler Starks all had two hits in the opening game for Colby (7-2). Carlson smacked a two-run single in the fourth inning, while Corey and Colin Cummings both had two RBI.

Ladd worked six innings, struck out two, and walked two.

In the second game, Starks finished with three hits and Alec Finigan added two hits for the Mules. Colby entered the top of the seventh inning trailing 4-0, but Starks had a two-run single and Finigan had an RBI single to cut the margin to 4-3.

Softball

UMF 5-6, Eastern Nazarene 4-4: Erskine graduate Meryl Bond homered in the second game and Amy Jones had a key RBI double in the opener to lead the Beavers to the doubleheader sweep in Quincy, Mass.

Lily Barry had a two-run single to snap a 3-3 game in the top of the fifth of the opener for UMF (2-0).

In the second game, the teams were tied 3-3 before Bond belted a three-run home run in the fifth to help the Beavers earn the sweeo.

The Lions dropped to 4-12.

Also on Friday: Messalonskee graduate Jesse Labreck placed second in her heat and 27th in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays in Austin with a time of 13.90.
