In the midst of the gun control debate, I sense a moving away from concern for “the other’s rights” because of the almost exclusive focus on “my rights.” It’s more “me and mine” and less “us and ours.”
Is American individualism blinding us from working for the common good, the common safety, of everyone in our nation?
A similar preoccupation with self also prevents us from rejoicing over the inclusion of so many more of our fellow citizens about to receive adequate health care, thanks to the Affordable Health Care Act, called Obamacare by some.
I believe that any society can be judged by how well it provides safety and health care to all of its members.
I trust that the inclusiveness of “The American Dream” will once again prevail.
