SKOWHEGAN — Sappi Fine Paper North America has pledged $100,000 to an engineering scholarship fund for the University of Maine, according to a company release.

The money, which will be given during the next four years, will be used to establish an endowed scholarship known as the Sappi Scholarship Fund at the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation.

The donation is a gift to the foundation’s $2 million fundraising campaign, which begins this year.

Mark Gardner, Sappi president and chief executive officer, said in a release that the donation was made because of the long-standing relationship between the company and the university.

Former scholarship recipients work throughout Sappi’s two Maine-based mills in Skowhegan and Westbrook as well as its other sites across the country, according to the release.

The foundation supports more than 80 students with full-tuition scholarships and has awarded more than 3,800 scholarships since its founding in 1950.
